What they are and what they are based on

Serious games

About

Serious games are based on serious real life challenges that our participants encounter every day. What the games do is provide a simulated serious work environment that is safe and ready for testing and learning. Due to the serious nature of our games, the skills and experiences acquired can be easily applied to the real life workplace.

Our games aren’t just serious – they are still games. For centuries humans have been playing games in order to learn and acquire new skills. Our games are fun, challenging and at times infuriating – which is why we love them. They provide a controlled environment in which challenges can be taken on and limits can be tested without any risk.

To put it short: Our Serious Games are like a sandbox for learning and development while still having an evidence based connection to real life.

Scientific basis

Our Serious games are rooted in neuroscience and the 3F model: Fun, Fear, and Focus by Friederike Fabritius.

The model argues that by applying the 3 F’s, one has the ability to work more productively and improve their work performance. We applied the 3F model to the design of our games and the delivery of our masterclasses. The balance between all three elements creates an immersive learning environment.

Fun

Using text, audio, video and engagement with “live” characters as well as a facilitator to support the learning process gives a truly rich and varied learning experience with the underpinning learning theory to match.

The “live” aspect of our games is what makes them so fun as you embark on a rollercoaster of emotions and stress, trying to solve the challenges we throw at you. But in the end, you finish the game on a serotonin high.

Fear

No two serious games are alike. Adapting and responding to the participants’ needs, skill levels and the decisions that are made in real time creates an immersive learning experience that is as adaptive as real life. Not knowing how the game will unfold evokes fear. You need to adapt and be agile. Knowing when, where and how to do so is the knowledge we seek to impart. Our serious games can therefore be combined or separated based on these needs and customised based on preference.

Focus

Learning remotely or virtually can be a challenge as there are many things fighting for your attention. By wholly immersing participants in the games holds their attention in a way that ordinary learning does not. You will be able to focus much longer than you are used to.
